Explorer Scouts inspire North Tameside teens to dream big

A NORTH Tameside Explorer Scout unit is celebrating a packed first year after inspiring a wave of local teens to take on challenges, learn new skills and push themselves beyond their comfort zones.

Dovers Explorers, launched in 2024, have barely paused for breath since opening.

Their programme has taken them through everything from pioneering and outdoor cooking to media skills, team-building and even planning their own activities.

A recent young leader training weekend added to the growing list of opportunities shaping the group’s confident, capable members.

One explorer described how the unit has evolved quickly: “When we started Explorers, it wasn’t as established as it is now. We noticed the large amount of freedom we get and how it allows us the opportunity to choose our own programme.”

That freedom lies at the heart of Explorer Scouting, giving young people the chance to discover what they enjoy – whether that’s hiking new terrain, trying practical challenges, or building something ambitious right on their doorstep.

The impact has been clear to the leaders who support them.

One volunteer said: “I am proud to see how the young people have grown, and love watching them develop new skills. One young man would never camp before but is now enjoying camping and activities with Dovers.

“It is rewarding to see how the young people are developing into young adults and knowing they are safe in a supportive environment.”

With momentum building, the unit is now seeking more local teens who are up for adventure and keen to shape their own Explorer journey.
