TWO organisations in Ashton-under-Lyne have been recognised with the highest honour a voluntary group can receive.
For both Side by Side Counselling and the Friends of Waterloo Park have been named recipients of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
The prestigious accolade – regarded as the MBE for voluntary organisations – celebrates outstanding work by those that make a difference within their communities.

Both Ashton groups have long been central to local life, offering vital services and opportunities for residents.
Founded in 2007, Side by Side Counselling has spent more than 18 years providing accessible mental health support for people across Tameside.
Its qualified and trainee volunteer counsellors offer a safe, compassionate environment for those experiencing emotional distress, trauma or ongoing mental health challenges.
Over nearly two decades, the organisation has supported thousands of people, helping individuals build resilience and navigate difficult moments in their lives.
Reacting to the honour, founder Luke Entwistle said: “We are incredibly honoured to receive The King’s Award for Voluntary Service. This recognition is a testament to the unwavering efforts of our volunteers and the vital role we play in our community.

“We are grateful for the trust placed in us by those we serve, and we remain committed to providing compassionate care to everyone who seeks our help.”
Side by Side is marking the achievement with a celebration event for volunteers on December 16, where they will reflect on the honour and discuss future initiatives to expand their outreach and mental health support programmes.
Also receiving the King’s Award are the Friends of Waterloo Park, who have spent years bringing the green space to life through events, activities and ongoing improvement projects.
The group shared their delight and felt the accolade reflects the hard work of their volunteers.
“This is the culmination of several years’ work, running events and activities from Waterloo Park,” they said in a statement. “All the volunteers have worked really hard and truly deserve this honour.”
The news was celebrated at the group’s popular Tea and Toast gathering, where volunteers also marked Dave Reed’s birthday, enjoying a buffet to toast the double occasion.
