Support for Greater Manchester’s unpaid carers this winter

As Carers Rights Day approaches, NHS Greater Manchester is urging unpaid carers across the region to prioritise their own health and wellbeing this winter, alongside the care they provide to loved ones.

Every day, around 12,000 people in the UK become unpaid carers—often without realising it. Whether supporting an elderly parent, a partner with a long-term condition, or a friend with disabilities, many carers are unaware of the help, rights and financial support available to them.

In Greater Manchester, thousands of residents provide unpaid care. This winter, NHS Greater Manchester is encouraging carers to take small but important steps to stay well, safe and connected.

Winter wellbeing tips for carers

  • Stay protected with vaccinations: Eligible unpaid carers can get free flu jabs and COVID-19 boosters through GPs, pharmacies or walk-in clinics.
  • Look after your mental health: Caring can be emotionally demanding. Carers are encouraged to take breaks, talk to someone, or access support such as the 24/7 Greater Manchester Mental Health Crisis Helpline on 0800 953 0285.
  • Have a back-up plan: If you become unwell, make sure there’s a plan in place so the person you care for continues to receive support. Local councils can advise on emergency or respite care.
  • Keep your home warm and safe: Help with heating, falls prevention and financial support is available through local councils and winter wellbeing hubs. More information is available via GMCA’s Winterwise campaign.

Getting the right care

Carers are reminded not to neglect their own health. Local pharmacies can help with minor health concerns and medicines advice. For urgent but non-life-threatening issues, NHS 111 is available online or by phone. The NHS App can also be used to check symptoms, book appointments and manage prescriptions.

Support beyond healthcare

Carers can request a carer’s assessment from their local council to explore what support could make their role easier. Many areas also offer drop-in sessions and peer support groups.

For those juggling work and caring responsibilities, local schemes such as the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter, WorkWell, and the Greater Manchester Working Carer Toolkit offer guidance to help employers and employees find flexible solutions.

Joanne Chilton, Director of Adult Social Care Transformation at NHS Greater Manchester, said:

“Carers play an invaluable role in our communities, but we know it can take a toll on their own health and wellbeing. This Carers Rights Day, we want to make sure carers know they are not alone. There is practical help and local support available to help them stay well and continue caring safely.”
