STUDENTS at Laurus Ryecroft Academy in Droylsden left a positive impression on their local MP after a thought-provoking Q&A session.
Angela Rayner also announced the results of the school council elections on her visit to the sixth form, which was established two years ago.
It was a tense moment as votes were counted and Ayaan Naveed was revealed as the new President, winning by just one vote.
Once the applause settled, the sixth formers turned interviewer, posing thoughtful questions to the Labour MP for Ashton-under-Lyne – on topics ranging from political participation and constituency engagement, to the future of the NHS and improvements to local town centres.

“School visits are the best bit of the job and I was so impressed with the range of issues covered by the students,” said the MP, whose constituency includes Droylsden.
“Their interest and awareness of current affairs gives me great hope for the future.”
Head of Sixth Form, Tom Mansfield, praised both the students and the MP for their contributions to a lively and engaging session.
“It was a real privilege to welcome Angela to speak with our students,” he said. “Her visit sparked thoughtful discussion and gave students a valuable opportunity to engage directly with someone at the heart of national politics.
“During a lively Q&A session, students asked about her proudest political moments and how to address political apathy among young people.

“Angela’s candid responses and personal insights made a lasting impression, helping our students see the real-world impact of political engagement and inspiring them to think critically about their own roles in society.”
Newly-elected student president Ayaan said the visit had helped inspire the students to think more deeply about their role in shaping the community.
“I think political activism and opinion is so important to young people and can only make our county a more democratic and well represented place to live.
“Having our local MP come into our Sixth Form helps open up our minds to a world that people my age may not be fully aware of and empower us to make a positive change.”
