THE UPPER level of a former Stalybridge bar is to be converted into a five-bedroomed house in multiple occupation (HMO).
What was last known as The Brit Stop, at the junction of Corporation Street and Melbourne Street, is to house a restaurant in its ground floor.
But Tameside Council has given the go ahead to change the first floor into living accommodation.

According to plans, each unit would have showering facilities, while there will be a communal lounge and kitchen.
And documents supporting the scheme outlined the HMO’s target market.
They state: “The proposed HMO would be used by individuals who need short term accommodation and are likely to be rented to individuals visiting the area or who have business nearby, or staff who work in and around the town centre who want comfortable accommodation close to the commercial areas and offices with lower rates in comparison to hotels.
“Sufficient space would be provided in each room to relax and lounge.
“In addition, a separate shared kitchen would be provided on the first floor and shared lounge/living room would be provided in the roof space/second floor.

“The proposed change of use of the first floor and roof space would reuse a site which has been stood empty for several years.
“The site is becoming to appear unsightly in this prominent location and in need of investment to bring the property back to a suitable functional use and where it would not have a negative impact on the surrounding area.”
In a decision notice, signed by Nicola Elsworth, Tameside Council’s strategic growth programme director, it states: “The local planning authority worked positively and proactively with the applicant to identify various solutions during the application process to ensure that the proposal comprised sustainable development and would improve the economic, social and environmental conditions of the area.”
