Powerful short film highlights life-changing role of foster carers

A POWERFUL new short film has been released shining a spotlight on the life-changing difference foster carers can make to children in care.

The Run, produced by Tameside Council in partnership with other Greater Manchester authorities and more than 90 local authority fostering services nationwide, tells the story of Tom, an 11-year-old boy who finds stability and encouragement through fostering.

The Run tells the story of an 11-year-old boy called Tom

The film contrasts Tom’s early struggles – running away from danger and rushing to school hungry – with his growing passion for running as a sport. It climaxes with Tom competing in an athletics tournament, supported by his new foster family.

Launched on Thursday, October 9, at Everyman Cinema in Altrincham, The Run is part of a major national campaign to recruit more foster carers and highlight the urgent need for stable, loving homes.

Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Children and Families, Cllr Teresa Smith, said: “The message of this project is very simple, but so important – we need foster carers and we need foster carers in Tameside.

“This sentiment applies across the country, which is why this project has grown into a national campaign. The Run is a brilliant, emotional film none of us could have produced on our own, which is why this partnership is so important.

“We have an engaging, high-quality film – which is great for all of us – but the message is loud and clear; there is an urgent need for more foster carers to step forward across the country. Here in Tameside, we need good people to join our fostering family to be the real difference.”

Foster carers in Tameside receive full training, support, and an allowance, along with a dedicated social worker and access to a buddy system for advice and guidance.

Fostering can be full-time or part-time, from emergency to short-term care, and is open to people aged 21 and over who can offer a safe and loving home.
