A NEIGHBOURHOOD group is asking an area’s youngsters to be poetry in motion in a new competition.
The third annual Children’s Creative Writing Competition, organised by Gee Cross Brabyns Neighbourhood Watch, is back for 2025.
And this year, young writers are invited to submit original poems inspired by the theme Werneth Winter Wonderland.

Work can be based on fact or fiction and be set in the past or present – and a knowing eye will cast his over entries.
For the poems will be judged by Dr Mark P Henderson, a highly respected and successful published author with several books to his credit.
He is part of the Glossop Bookfest and also organises short story competitions and literary events for children and residents in the Glossop area.
A spokesperson said it, ‘reflects the Neighbourhood Watch Group’s ongoing commitment to fostering creativity and celebrating community spirit among young people.’
The competition is open to children living or attending school in, or who have a connection with Gee Cross.
Poems can be no longer than 40 lines, short or long, but they need to be handwritten.
It is open to all primary school children, divided into two age categories – ages seven to nine and ages 10 to 11 (Year Six).
Entries will be accepted from Monday, October 20 until Friday, November 7th November and each needs to include the entrant’s name, address, age and name of the school they attend.
They can be handed in to Jardine Estates, Tesco Express and Griffs On The Green in Gee Cross village.
Winners in each age group will receive book tokens: £30 for first place, £20 for second, and £10 for third.
Additionally, selected winners will be presented with books to further inspire their literary journeys.
