Golden anniversary for Ryecroft Hall Community Association

WHAT began as a single dance back in 1975 has grown into a thriving community hub at the heart of Audenshaw life.

Ryecroft Hall Community Association has been celebrating its 50th anniversary, with hundreds of members, decades of history, and a calendar packed with events.

To mark the golden milestone, every member will receive a special commemorative pen and the celebrations include a prize draw.

The association’s story started when Frank and Renee Mooring brought local people together for a dance at Ryecroft Hall, just off Manchester Road.

In the present day, around 300 members take part in a wide range of classes and activities – from health and fitness to drama, dance, cooking and computer sessions.

Chair Pam Watkin, who has been involved for 42 years and served in her role for 40, says the association has become a lifeline for the area.

“It’s vital for Audenshaw and is our hub for the community,” she explained. “It’s a nice building and people are friendly and can come and have a brew and a chat in the warm and attend the classes and events.

“It developed from nothing and has grown and grown and it’s brilliant how we did it. The more the merrier if people want to come and join.”

Vice chairman Brenda Reaney has also given more than four decades of service, helping to guide the volunteer-led group that has kept Ryecroft Hall busy and welcoming for generations.

Local councillor Teresa Smith, a committee member and Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Children and Families, praised the association’s success.

“Congratulations to Ryecroft Hall Community Association on their Golden Anniversary,” she said. “It’s fantastic how the Association has developed to become an important hub for the community that provides something for everyone with its array of sessions and events.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved for their work and dedication that has helped the Association thrive and become such a success at the heart of the community.”

The Grade II listed Ryecroft Hall itself has a long history. Once a voluntary hospital during the First World War, it was gifted to the people of Audenshaw in 1922 and remains a focal point for the town. Council staff are still based there, while the association continues to fill its rooms with activity.

The anniversary year is far from the end of the celebrations. As well as the daily programme of classes, the community will gather for the annual Christmas lights switch-on on November 28, followed by a members’ Christmas party in December.
