A NEW outdoor classroom has been officially unveiled at a Tameside primary school during a special ceremony.
The event took place on Tuesday, September 30, at Milton St John’s Primary in Mossley and welcomed the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Shibley Alam, along with her consort and Cllr Taf Sharif.

They joined staff, pupils, and parents to celebrate the addition of the versatile wooden structure, which features a canopy to provide shelter and shade.
Designed to create a flexible and inspiring learning environment, the new facility will allow pupils to take part in lessons, creative projects, and group activities while enjoying the benefits of the outdoors.

Alongside structured lessons, the space will also serve as a quiet retreat during playtimes, where children can read, socialise, or take part in small-group activities.
The classroom was made possible thanks to the efforts of the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA), which raised around £7,000 through a variety of fundraising events at the school, supported by generous donations from the local community.

Speaking to The Correspondent, PTA members Cate Hines and Cara Schofield said:
“It’s better than we ever imagined. The possibilities are endless for the children and what they can use it for. This has been a pipe dream for the school for a very long time.”

Headteacher Miss Gallagher and staff praised the initiative, highlighting its potential to inspire curiosity, creativity, and wellbeing among pupils.
Speaking at the ceremony, school leaders thanked the PTA and the wider community for their support in making the project possible.
The event marked both the official opening of the classroom and a celebration of the strong community spirit behind its creation.
