A MUM-TO-BE from Hyde is urging other expectant mothers across Tameside to protect themselves and their babies this winter by getting vaccinated.
Alex Hart, who is due to give birth during the colder months, has already received her flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) jabs.
She says it gives her peace of mind, knowing she and her baby are better protected.
“From 12 weeks you get advised of the different vaccines you’ll need at different stages,” she explained. “I’m getting my vaccines to make sure that my baby and I are both safe as I’ll be heavily pregnant during winter.”

The NHS winter vaccination programme is now under way, with pregnant women eligible for free flu and RSV jabs. Both viruses can cause serious illness during pregnancy and increase the risk of complications.
Flu strikes every winter and spreads quickly, with symptoms often appearing suddenly. RSV, another common winter virus, can cause coughs and colds but is particularly dangerous for babies and older people.
Councillor Taf Sharif, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Population Health and Wellbeing, said: “Flu might just feel like a bad cold for some people, but for others including pregnant women, older residents and those with existing health conditions it can be much more serious.
“Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and those around you. Our local NHS teams are working hard to make sure everyone who’s eligible can get their jabs. If you’ve had an invite or know you’re eligible, please don’t wait, book your appointment and stay safe this winter.”
For Alex, the decision was straightforward and she hopes other mums-to-be will follow suit.
“Go for it, you want to do everything you can to keep your baby safe,” she said.
Flu vaccines are available throughout pregnancy, while the RSV jab is offered later on.
Appointments can be booked via maternity services, GP surgeries, or local pharmacies.
