Funding for community groups to help residents in winter

COMMUNITY groups across Tameside are being urged to apply for funding to help keep people warm, well-fed and connected during the colder months.

Applications have opened for this year’s Community Winter Support Grant, which offers financial support to local projects tackling the challenges of winter.

The fund is aimed at groups working with those most at risk, including older people, carers, people living in poverty, those who are homeless and residents with disabilities.

The grant can support initiatives ranging from warm spaces and social activities to food provision and other creative ways of helping people cope when the temperature drops.

Last winter, funding helped set up warm hubs across the borough, provided hot meals and supported wellbeing activities.

Councillor John Taylor, Executive Member for Adult Social Care, said the difference it made was clear to see.

“Last year we saw lots of incredible support provided to our residents through the Community Winter Support Grant,” he said.

“From contributing the money towards Warm Hubs where people could go for a brew and chat to coordinating craft and wellbeing activities, so many people were supported in our borough. In some cases, people were provided with nutritious meals to enjoy in good company.

“If you think that your group could benefit from this please get in touch with the team, they will be happy to tell you more and guide you through the application process.”

Small grants of up to £1,500 are available, while larger applications up to £5,000 will also be considered. In exceptional cases, even bigger projects could receive funding following discussions with the Community Winter Support Team.

Applications will remain open until all funding has been allocated.
