Mossley charity event to showcase sustainable fashion

A TAMESIDE charity is set to give fast fashion the boot with a stylish event putting sustainability in the spotlight.

Emmaus Mossley, which supports people who have experienced homelessness, will host its Thread Revolution evening on Thursday, October 9, at its Secondhand Superstore.

The event will feature a runway show where models showcase pre-loved clothing, shoes and accessories – proving that second-hand doesn’t mean second best.

After the show, guests will have the chance to browse and buy from rails packed with affordable fashion finds, from designer labels to vintage gems.

But it won’t just be about clothes – as there will also be a live DJ, refreshments from the cafe and information on the impact of fast fashion.

Molly Ridgway, Retail Assistant at Emmaus Mossley, said the event aims to challenge perceptions.

“This year’s fashion show will have a bit of a twist. Our Thread Revolution event will not only entertain our supporters, but also raise awareness about the huge impact fast fashion is presenting to both charity shops and society as a whole.

“The evening will be fun and engaging, inspiring people to see the many benefits of being thrifty and shopping pre-loved.”

The charity, based at Longlands Mill, is known locally for its Secondhand Superstore – which sells everything from furniture and books, to bric-a-brac and upcycled items.

Fashion has become a growing part of its offer – and staff say they want people to see pre-loved clothing as stylish and sustainable, not a last resort.

Retail Manager Hazel Hodkinson added: “Here at Emmaus, we receive lots of quality donations of clothing but there are challenges that all charity shops are facing. Second-hand doesn’t mean second best and there are more affordable and conscious alternatives to fast fashion.

“This event will celebrate the role everyone can play by shopping more ethically whilst supporting local good causes.”

Tickets are £5 and available in advance from the Superstore’s main desk or via Eventbrite. Doors open at 6pm on Thursday, October 9, at Emmaus Mossley. For more details, visit emmaus.org.uk/mossley
