Awesome Ashton students make the grade in exams

TWO TERRIFIC students from Tameside will be taking their talents to Cambridge University after amazing A-Level results.

Jake Cowdell-Harrison, of Hyde, and Mossley’s Lily Brown, who studied at Ashton Sixth Form College, were left feeling in an A* mood after receiving their grades on Thursday, August 14.

Now they will head to Cambridge with very different career plans in mind.

Jake, who gained A* in History, Politics and Law and will study History and Politics at Lucy Cavendish College, admitted about his goals: “I’ve got no idea to be honest with you.

“But I wasn’t really very nervous. I thought, ‘It’ll be what it’ll be. Either I’ll get the grades or I won’t but at the end of the day, I’ll be all right.’”

Lily, who gained A* in English Literature, Physics and History and an A in Geography, will study English at Clare College.

If her plans come to fruition, she will be all write.

She said: “I’d quite like to be an author. I fancy fiction writing or even journalism or publishing.

“I was actually OK in the build-up to getting my results, it was more on the morning.

“I needed my eight hours sleep and I got them. It’s what you’d call normal nerves but if you weren’t nervus, you wouldn’t care.”

There were plenty of smiles as students attended Ashton Sixth Form, on Darnton Road, with many wondering why they were nervous.

Friend Brooke Plant, of Droylsden, achieved Distinctions in Science and Music, and a C in Psychology.

She will also study at Newcastle after doing, as she described: “Pretty well.”

She added: “I wasn’t nervous as I woke up at 8am. I slept because I was scared but right before I got my results, I was like, ‘I can’t change it now.’

“But I still got into the university I wanted.”

“They have worked incredibly hard and I am so proud of what they have all achieved in their A-Levels, T-Levels and vocational qualifications.

“These superb grades will set them up well for their next steps, whether that is university, an apprenticeship or employment with training and I look forward to hearing about their future successes.

“In addition to their qualifications, our leavers have contributed hugely to college life over the past two years and have developed massively on a personal level.

“I would like to thank them for what they brought to our community and I hope that they leave us with lovely memories of their time here.

“Thanks also to our wonderful staff for their excellent teaching and the many ways in which they have supported our students to achieve these results.

“I appreciate what they do and I know our students do too. “
