TAMESIDE families are being invited along to join a day of free creative fun to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day.
Friday, August 15, will mark 80 years since Japan announced its surrender to allied forces in 1945, effectively marking the end of World War II.
On that day, Tameside Council’s Culture and Arts Team is holding a VJ Family Fun Day in King George the Fifth Playing Fields in Ashton-under-Lyne.
Running from 10am to 4pm, the event includes vibrant workshops, live performances, interactive entertainment and hands-on activities for all ages.
The Summer Theatre ‘The Hare and The Moon’ session will be taking place at 11am and 2pm, and the Outdoor Arts team will also be present throughout the day.
The council says it’s an opportunity to honour and celebrate history as a local community.
“Our VJ Day event is an exciting opportunity to come together as a community and honour the importance of World War II ending 80 years ago,” said Councillor Leanne Feeley, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture.
“The event aims to bring the community together to honour the past and celebrate togetherness and peace. Join us in celebrating history with a family fun day, jam-packed with free activities and performances.
“It will be a great day with something for everyone to enjoy! Well done to our brilliant teams for arranging another fantastic community event to honour such an important and historic occasion.”
