Mossley delight after Brookfields tree reservation order confirmed

A PROTECTION order at an area of Mossley that has been repeatedly targeted by developers has been retained.

Brookfields has seen a number of attempts to build homes on it – and vociferous opposition.

Now after Tameside Council’s Speaker’s Panel (Planning) committee approved keeping a woodland protection order – which is also a tree preservation order (TPO) – that threat appears to have been averted.

A provisional ruling was made on May 27 but an objection on behalf of landowner Paul Miller was lodged, resulting in the hearing on Wednesday, July 23.

And after four attempts to develop the land, dating as far back as 1989, TPO’s retention is seen as a key victory for opponents.

The objection meant Mossley Town Council Chair Cllr Dave Jones, Deputy Chair Cllr Hamza Aslam and Cllr Jack Homer had to act again.

One letter of support stated: “The woodland protection Order is fantastic news, and we can continue to enjoy the privilege of living next to such a beautiful area,” while the town council added: “It is a success for the community and a fitting tribute to the work all those involved have undertaken.”

Cllrs Homer and Jones spoke in support of retaining the TPO. Now after it was retained, the parish authority voiced its delight.

It said: “We’ve long opposed development on this land due to its environmental significance and high flood risk

“This decision is a major step forward in safeguarding this vital area for future generations.

“This is a HUGE WIN for Mossley — and proof that when we organise, speak up, and work in solidarity, we can protect our green spaces.”

In considering whether to enforce the TPO, Tameside Council officers believed it had to act, or face losing the natural environment.

A report stated: “Some of the trees within the woodland are at risk of being felled.

“Officers have become aware through a pre-application enquiry of a plan for a temporary tarmacked compound area in an area where there are trees of significant

high amenity value.

“Officers are of the opinion that the Woodland holds significant public benefit and high amenity value of significance to the surrounding environment.”

And after their victory, Mosley Town Council added: “Let’s keep building a cleaner, greener and safer Mossley.”
