Summer stories challenge springs into Tameside libraries

SCHOOL might be out for summer but the adventure doesn’t have to stop there – especially for book-loving kids.

Tameside’s libraries are inviting young readers to dive into the Summer Reading Challenge – a fun and free way to keep brains buzzing during the holidays.

This year’s theme is Story Garden – which is all about mixing imagination, creativity and a love of reading.

Aimed at children aged four to 11, and their families, the challenge is simple – read six or more books over the summer and enjoy creative activities in the library to keep reading skills growing while youngsters are not in the classroom.

The activities include story-themed yoga, puppet sessions and story drawing workshops and every child who completes the challenge – organised by The Reading Agency – will get a medal and certificate.

All you have to do to take part is sign up at your nearest Tameside library. Every child who completes it by September 20 will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Sports Direct voucher.

Pre-school children can also take part in a special Story Garden Mini-Challenge. Children who won’t be at primary school in September can collect a Story Garden Mini-Challenge card on which to collect stickers when they read six books, plus a gold medal sticker when they complete the challenge.

Councillor Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic programme to help encourage children to continue reading and developing their skills, outside of school. It also supports nurturing a foundation for creativity and an interest in and love of books – which will prove invaluable to them.”
