Six fly-tippers fined as schoolchildren join Hyde clean-up

SIX people have been slapped with fines after waste was found dumped on streets in Hyde.

The litter and fly-tipping was discovered during a day of action in the town, organised by Tameside Council.

Staff from the authority’s waste enforcement and community safety teams were joined by local councillors, pupils from Greenfield Primary School, volunteers from the community and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

Schoolchildren from Greenfield Primary joined in the litter picking fun in Hyde town centre

They teamed up and rolled up their sleeves to help tidy up the town centre last Thursday (July 17).

The council says officers found evidence traced to six people, who will receive fixed penalty notices and face prosecution if they are not paid. It takes the total number of fines for waste-related offences in 2025 to 123.

As part of the day, local residents were also able to seek advice and guidance on personal safety and home security at an information stand in Clarendon Square Shopping Centre.

The council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods was particularly pleased to see local schoolchildren looking after the community they call home.

“Thank you so much to everyone involved for your efforts and enthusiasm,” said Councillor Laura Boyle.

“The school contacted us afterwards to say the children enjoyed it so much they have asked to take part in any future litter picks, which is just wonderful in inspiring our next generation to take care of and take pride in their local communities. Well done to all the children involved!

“Dropping litter and fly-tipping waste are criminal offences – there is no excuse for either and they spoil the local area for everyone. We will always take enforcement action against those responsible where we find evidence.”

The Our Streets scheme aims to bring Tameside Council and local communities together working to tidy the area so residents can continue to be proud of where they live. You can find out more at www.tameside.gov.uk/ourstreets
