AN AWARD-WINNING voluntary group took the Deputy Prime Minister on a stroll to show her how they keep a popular green space in tip-top condition.
Ashton-under-Lyne MP Angela Rayner has praised the Friends of Sunny Bank Vale group for their work in improving the area in Droylsden.
Formed by local residents in July 2011, the group has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – the highest award given to volunteer groups.

It also regularly wins accolades from the Royal Horticultural Society and achieves Green Flag status – which is international accreditation given to publicly accessible parks and open spaces.
On a tranquil afternoon walk, Ms Rayner – who is also the Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary – was shown the duck trail and the recently-installed bee planter, as well as the wild flower meadow, by the group’s volunteers.
“The volunteers do an absolutely incredible job and the Vale is a fantastic space for local families to enjoy,” the Labour MP said.

“It really came into its own during the pandemic and I know how much people appreciated having somewhere tranquil to go for their walks.
“I would like to give my heartfelt thank you to The Friends of Sunny Bank Vale for their excellent and consistent efforts.”
People can keep up to date with the group’s efforts on their website and Facebook page.
