Volunteer Circle of Friends provides vital support in Denton

IN September 2018, Volunteer Circle of Friends, in Denton, emerged as a beacon of support for those affected by dementia and social isolation in the community.

Initially formed in response to the closure of a local Alzheimer’s Society group, the organisation was founded by dedicated volunteers Linda Smith, Freda Gregory, and Ian Carter.

These individuals, having served with the previous group, stepped up to ensure continuity of care for their community.

The group operates under the stewardship of a committed committee of five members, supported by an additional five volunteers, all of whom generously donate their time.

What distinguishes Volunteer Circle of Friends is its self-funded status, sustained by the generosity of local businesses, fundraisers and community leaders such as Denton Councillors Denise Ward and Vincent Ricci.

This year, the group celebrated a significant fundraising success, with events such as Denton Working Men’s Club’s Easter Raffle and a dedicated fundraising day raising a commendable £3,345.

These funds are crucial in supporting the group’s activities and outings, which offer participants moments of respite and social interaction.

Meetings are held every Monday and Wednesday at Victoria Park Community Centre, where attendees from across the area gather for activities, entertainment, and support.

Monday sessions are dedicated to engaging activities, while Wednesdays feature entertainment ranging from singers to a lively ukulele band.

The group also organises outings, such as a recent excursion offering lunch and entertainment at a Blackpool hotel, providing valuable opportunities for participants to enjoy time away from home in a nurturing environment.

Beyond its initial focus on dementia and Alzheimer’s support, Volunteer Circle of Friends extends its welcome to individuals experiencing social isolation, including long-term caregivers.
