FROM August 1, a new UK law will make it a criminal offence to possess a “ninja sword,” even within the privacy of your own home.
In preparation, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is launching a month-long amnesty and compensation scheme throughout July to help residents comply safely and legally.
A “ninja sword” is legally defined as a straight-bladed sword (not curved), between 14 and 24 inches long, with a single or double cutting edge and a tanto-style (triangular dagger) point.
If you own a sword matching this description, you must surrender it by July 31, 2025.
How to surrender your sword
The surrender scheme allows individuals to hand in qualifying swords at designated police stations or mobile amnesty vans without facing prosecution.
Local drop-off point in Tameside:
- Ashton Police Station, Manchester Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL7 0BQ
Mobile amnesty vans will also be operating across Greater Manchester in July. A full schedule is expected to be confirmed by GMP soon.
Compensation available
Residents may be eligible for financial compensation if:
- The sword was purchased before March 27, 2025
- A receipt or valid proof of purchase is provided
The minimum pay-out is £5, with higher amounts considered for items with supporting evidence of value. Compensation forms are available via GMP and government websites.
Important Deadlines and Legal Risks
After August 1, ownership of a ninja sword becomes a criminal offence. Penalties include up to six months in prison, or up to two years in serious cases.
