Ashton day of action sees fly tipping penalty notices issued

THE NUMBER of those caught out for fly tipping reached double figures in one blitz in one part of Ashton-under-Lyne.

Tameside Council officers, councillors, residents and school pupils all took part in a Day of Action on Thursday, June 26 in the St Michael’s ward.

Focused on visiting hotspots and cleaning up dumped waste and litter, a number of incidents were recorded.

And a total of 11 fixed penalty notices (FPNs) were issued.

Centred around the community litter hub at St James’ Church, children from the nearby primary school joined officers to litter pick and learn about the importance of looking after their environment.

The teams discussed fly tipping and waste concerns with residents and how to report these issues.

After the notices were issued, follow up action will be taken on the issues identified.

Tameside Council’s executive member for environmental services and neighbourhoods, Cllr Laura Boyle, said: “The recent ‘Our Streets Day of Action’ was a great success in addressing areas of concern and issuing 11 Fixed Penalty Notices for fly tipping offenders.

“Fly tipping is an inexcusable offence and it is vital consequences are given to those at fault.

“It was great to see local schools and residents getting involved helping to foster and encourage cleaner and safer towns. Thank you to all teams and those who took part.”
