Tameside headteacher shortlisted for national leadership honour

THE HEADTEACHER of a Tameside secondary school has been nominated for a prestigious prize at the British Training Awards.

Sheldon Logue, who celebrated his 20th anniversary at St Damian’s RC Science College in Ashton-under-Lyne in January, is on the shortlist for the Leader of the Year category.

Organisers received more than 360 entries from across the UK, with Mr Logue saying he was “shocked, humbled and delighted” to be a finalist.

“I truly believe in a great workforce where staff are valued, empowered and are equipped to do the best job that they can,” he said. “At the heart of this are two strands.

“Firstly, professional development. This is integral to a thriving workforce that needs to be pertinent to the individual yet meets the strategic needs of the school.

“The second strand is wellbeing. Staff wellbeing doesn’t just happen and needs to be systematically planned through a range of initiatives and/or looking at work practices within the school.”

Mr Logue cited the relatively small size of the school as a major factor in him making the shortlist, adding: “I get to know the staff as individuals.

“To summarise, my staff are great, work extremely hard and are highly professional in ensuring we ‘serve’ the students and wider members of this community.

“This nomination is a testament to their dedication.”

The headteacher is no stranger to ceremonies after scooping a silver gong for Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School at the National Teacher Awards in 2019, when taking St Damian’s from being in special measures to an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating.

He will be up against nine other finalists, including executives at in the transport, finance and engineering sectors.
