Mossley school writes new chapter in celebrating reading

WORLD Book Day isn’t just about putting together a great costume idea, it’s about showing children the power of reading.

A feast of book-themed activities were planned to keep the entire school at Micklehurst All Saints CE Primary engaged.

Deputy head teacher Sarah Jarman said the Mossley-based school is constantly striving to inspire a love of reading books.

“At Micklehurst, we place great emphasis on the importance and value of reading,” she told the Saddleworth Independent.

“Research shows that it improves our children’s literacy and communication skills, fosters creativity, reduces stress, promotes better academic performance and even contributes to success in their adult lives.

“World Book Day provided us with the perfect opportunity to celebrate everything that the literary world has to offer and we can’t wait to continue building on its success!”

The day began with the school’s annual Book Swap, where the children and their families picked up a new book from a vast selection of pre-loved texts. All of the books had been brought to school by the children themselves, in return for a book swap token.

A number of Year 6 pupils volunteered to help run the event and the hall was soon bustling with budding bookworms hunting for a new story to take home.

Each child also created their own book cover at home and wore it to the big Book Cover Parade, where each class showcased their covers and formed into a colourful human library.

Throughout the day, each year group held a range of activities from book-themed quizzes to spotlighting different authors – and even had a sorting hat ceremony similar to Harry Potter.

Every child ‘buddied up’ to share their favourite tales with each other and teachers also got involved in reading as they shared stories special to them to different classes.

As the day came to a close, each class proudly took to the stage in the school hall for the Poetry Slam as pupils shared a wide range of poems from William Shakespeare’s Song of the Witches to Michael Rosen’s The Outing, among other firm favourites.

The children also took home a book voucher as well as being given the extra gift this year of a copy of one of 2025’s World Book Day texts.
