New Tameside Hospital theatre prompts road closure

New maternity unit theatre at Tameside Hospital

Construction work has begun to build a new theatre at Tameside Hospital after planning
permission was granted.

Patients and visitors to the hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne are being warned that a road closure
is now in place to facilitate the expansion works.

Hospital bosses say the £5.8 million theatre – next to the Maternity Unit on Hartshead Close –
will add “valuable operating capacity to the Trust” with at least five new workers also employed.

A section of Hartshead Close is now closed to vehicles until the theatre is completed – which is
due to be by the end of March.

This is from the roundabout outside the hospital’s Hartshead North entrance, up to where the
road runs alongside the Charlesworth building.

A signed diversion is in place and pedestrian access is being maintained at all times.

Passengers will still be able to catch the bus from the stops on Fountain Street, as buses will
enter from Mossley Road and use the Hartshead North roundabout as a turning point.

However, during the works, services will not be calling at the Hartshead South stop and the 231
will not stop along Darnton Road.

A spokesperson for Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust said: “As a
result of the work, a small number of disabled parking spaces are being relocated to other parts
of the site and will be signposted accordingly.

“Access to all other car parks is unaffected. Thank you for your patience and understanding
during this work.”
