Tameside Labour supporters mourn death of chairman

TRIBUTES are being paid following the untimely death of Stalybridge and Hyde Constituency Labour Party chair, Stuart McKenzie.

The passionate advocate for younger representation in local politics was in his 20s and had recently been appointed to the role as part of a significant restructuring of the Labour Party in Tameside.

He sadly passed away after complications following emergency heart surgery.

Stuart was a rising star in the Labour Party. He twice stood in local elections as the Labour candidate for the Stalybridge South ward, tirelessly campaigning to represent the area he loved.

In his election profile, he expressed immense pride in standing for his community and emphasised his commitment to bringing fresh, younger perspectives to local government.

Jonathan Reynolds, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, led the tributes, describing Stuart as a “truly wonderful and special man.”

Mr Reynolds said: “The whole of the Stalybridge and Hyde Constituency Labour Party is in grief this weekend at the loss of our chair and friend, Stuart McKenzie, following emergency heart surgery in recent weeks.

“Stuart was a truly wonderful and special man. Friendly, fun, clever and kind, he had so much to look forward to.

“That we have lost him so young, still in his twenties, is incredibly difficult to come to terms with.”

Reynolds highlighted the respect Stuart commanded within the Labour Party, noting the esteem required to take on the role of chair, particularly at such a young age.

He recalled their close working relationship, describing him as a source of “counsel and insight” who had a remarkable ability to view issues thoughtfully and constructively.

Stuart was an active member of the Stalybridge community. He was often seen at civic events, as a supporter of Stalybridge Celtic and at Labour conferences, where he built strong connections with fellow members.

His election to the Labour North West regional board further showcased his growing influence and dedication to the party.

Reynolds also shared personal condolences, adding: “I am personally absolutely bereft, but most of all Claire and I are thinking of Stuart’s Mum Judith, and girlfriend Ella, at this unimaginable time.

“Rest in peace to a true talent, a dear friend to many, and a lovely young man.”
