LOCAL Scouts came together for an evening of reminiscing to continue their celebrations for a special birthday.
North Tameside District Scouts was born on August 3, 1974, when new local authority boundary changes were introduced.
The Ashton and Droylsden scouting districts combined to make a new district, which was formed by the then District Commissioner Jack Millin.
The Scouting movement first started in 1907 with the first camp on Brownsea Island, organised by Sir Robert Baden-Powell.
The following year, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Ashton Scout groups were formed and it rose over the years to 17 Scout groups.
In Ashton, there are only 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 12th, 14th and 2/1 Hurst Scouts groups still helping young people in Scouting and now includes girls.
In Droylsden, there are 250th, 339th and 415th Scout groups.
All of the groups gathered at Richmond Street Community Centre as they brought along memory boards of their groups’ activities to reflect over the last 50 years.
Alan Fish, the former North Tameside District Scouts chair who is still involved in the district, said: “It was a great event looking at photos of many Scouts I knew from years ago and sadly some that are no longer with us.”
