A SCHOOL in Ashton-under-Lyne has received a special accolade after pupils created a beautiful sign for their prayer garden.
The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Betty Affleck, was joined by local ward councillors to present the award to St Christopher’s RC Primary and Nursery School.
The event celebrated the hard work of last year’s Year 4 pupils, who had undertaken learning which resulted in them achieving their Arts Award DISCOVER.
Some of the arts-based activities involved working with professional artist Caroline Coates where each pupil learnt new creative processes, working with a variety of materials that they could use to support their understanding of staying safe.
Pupils were also able to master new techniques and make their sign for the prayer garden.
A school spokesperson said: “The children loved working with a local artist to create a new sign for our Prayer Garden and learnt lots about keeping safe and about being reflective. They loved being so creative!”
Arts Awards support young people to develop as artists and arts leaders in their communities.
Tameside Council says it is committed to helping young people achieve their goals in this area by providing opportunities and support for them to flourish and develop.
The Arts Award project is facilitated through the support of the council’s Cultural and Community Safety Services.
Ashton Hurst councillor Mohammed Karim was also in attendance, along with councillor Mike Glover.
“I am so proud of representing a ward where St Christopher’s is one of the best schools,” said Cllr Karim.
“I wish them every success and always best. Children were so nice and polite. Teachers, staff and the governor’s team are doing excellent and hard work for the children.”
