IT support company’s ‘urgent’ appeal amid ‘critical shortage’

MANY of us are perhaps guilty of taking access to a device or computer whenever we need them for granted.

For some, it is considered a luxury and they rely on organisations like Tameside Community Computers CIC to keep them connected in this increasingly digital world.

But in order to help ‘bridge the digital divide’, the community interest company needs donations of laptops, desktop computers, tablets and mobile phones to refurbish and distribute for free to those most in need.

In an “urgent” appeal for support, Tameside Community Computers says it is currently facing “a critical shortage of refurbishable donated devices and funding” which are “essential for us to continue our organisation’s goals.”

The situation has reached the point where the Dukinfield-based IT support company is unable to accept any new referrals until after January 6, 2025.

However, the organisation says it “remains committed to fulfilling all outstanding referrals and ongoing project work during this period”.

It is calling on the public to consider donating devices they no longer need at home or at work.

Refurbishable devices can be any laptop or desktop computer with an Intel eighth gen or Ryzen fifth gen processor or newer; Android tablets or phones (which are Android 10 or newer); and Apple iPads or iPhones (which are iOS 16 or newer).

Those unable to donate devices can make a financial contribution to the organisation’s work, no matter how small, or spread the word with family and friends to help Tameside Community Computers CIC reach more people.

“Your support is crucial in helping us bridge the digital divide and continue making a positive impact in our communities,” the organisation said.

Tameside Community Computers CIC launched in August 2022, born on the back of the community work carried out by ZenTec Network Solutions during the Covid pandemic.
