Apartments plan for familiar Tameside Conservative Club

A PROMINENT town centre Conservative Club will be converted into six apartments if planning permission is granted.

The Denton venue, on Manchester Road, has stood empty since January.

Now Stockport-based B&S Denton has applied to Tameside Council to place living accommodation at the site.

As well as the six two-bedroomed apartments, slight alterations will also be made to it with a bin and cycle store in its yard, as well as replacement doors and windows.

Documents supporting the application, made by Victoria Sinclair, say it would boost the area.

They state: “The scheme secures the delivery of much needed additional living accommodation.

“The physical alterations proposed within this application are in our view minor in nature, are suitable and well designed in relation to the visual appearance and character of the existing property and will not result in harm to the visual amenities of the street scene, nor to the amenity of neighbouring properties.

“The development subject of this application secures an effective and efficient use of a previously developed, but currently vacant site, within a suitable and sustainable location.

“While the scheme does not secure provision of off-street car parking, there is noted to be provision in the local area for legal on-street parking.

“The scheme will be delivering much needed new residential development which will help to promote and support the vitality and viability of Denton through additional footfall and spend from occupiers.

“The loss of the former social club use is in our view acceptable given the extensive level of alternative provision available within walking distance of the site.

“In addition, the social club closed on the grounds that it had become unviable to operate and with no interest when put up for sale from other potential providers, it is clear that there is no longer a need to protect the former use.

“When weighing up the case in favour, and the benefits to be achieved through the viable re use of the building, the delivery of much needed additional new homes, and the benefits to the local economy, it is clear that the case in favour of this application is sufficient to justify approval.”

Denton Conservative Club was built in 1891 and after it closed, it was placed on the open market.

However, this application to convert it will see permission granted or refused by Tameside Council’s Speaker’s Panel (Planning) committee.

  1. The last thing we need are yet more HMOs and who are they for where will they park. It’s hard enough now to park in Denton. Also where will all the bins go? Not acceptable this at all. It’s yet another beautiful building that’s going to be ruined like Advocates house and I feel sorry for the poor residents living on the side street.

  2. Terrible idea .. there’s not enough room for parking or anything .
Do not turn into Flats !!!!!!

  3. There is no on street parking available There is a small pay and display carpark a few street away on the opposite side of the road. Traffic is already horrendous there’s the new housing estate on Andrew breeze way, tsb being converted to flats, swimming baths converted to flats. There is no need for more. It’s hard enough for residents on side streets in denton to mark without adding t9 the problem.
