MORE than 70 girls from Tameside experienced a fun and exciting weekend learning some new skills at a special camp.
It was part of Girlguiding’s goal to encourage girls to try new adventures and activities they might not otherwise get involved in.
The Ashton Division held its first camp for several years recently at Seven Springs Outdoor Activity Centre in Disley, Stockport.
Over 70 youngsters and 20 adults and young leaders camped for two nights, enjoying a full programme based on outer space.
There was everything from making decorated candle-lit jars and painting their own tote bags, to navigating a booby-trapped spider’s web, making mini rockets and decorating moon rocks.
The girls were also encouraged to try and identify three constellations and find the North star as well as naming the planets.
On the Saturday, Rainbows (four to seven-year-olds) joined the camp for the day and followed their own programme of space-related activities including attending astronaut training school, making an alien or a spaceship.
A spokesperson for the Girlguiding Ashton Division said: “The camp had been over a year in planning and ensuring everyone would have a fun and safe experience.
“Camping skills were put to the test as the weather was not kind to us. However, we can safely say that all the Brownies (7-10 years), Guides (10-14 years) and Rangers (14-18 years) coped admirably and went home tired, but happy with all they had achieved.
“We must thank our hard-working caterers who provided the meals and snacks and also the dedicated first aiders, who were on call throughout the camp.”
Anyone who would like to join the Girlguiding Ashton Division, either as a girl or as an adult, would be more than welcome.
The Ashton Division – which covers Ashton-under-Lyne, Droylsden and Audenshaw – is currently looking for leaders for all age groups, particularly Rainbows.
Units are now restarting at the beginning of the new school term and more information can be found at https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved/become-a-volunteer/register-to-volunteer/
