A STORAGE warehouse in Denton that was almost completely destroyed by fire three years ago will be rebuilt after planning permission was granted.
Self Storage saw a large section of their industrial building burned out in 2021.
Now the local firm has been allowed to rebuild their scarred unit into a more environmentally friendly scheme.
The Holland Street site sits next to junction 24 of the M60 motorway, where a major incident was declared back in February 2021 and smoke could be seen for miles around.
Hundreds of firefighters descended on to the scene at the time of the incident.
But a meeting of Tameside Council’s Speaker’s Panel (Planning) committee on Wednesday, September 11, was told how the plans would see what is left of the building bulldozed and replaced with a five-storey warehouse containing storage units.
The company has a number of sites across the borough and this would boost the business which offers storage space for customers.
Jason Dugdale, representing the applicant, told the panel: “We looked at the area where the fire happened.
“It’s not very attractive on the street scene due to its age, so we’re looking at replacing it with something that’s new, that looks good and is highly sustainable.
“We hope this warehouse will enhance and support the appearance of the street scene.”
Cllr Adrian Pearce commended the applicant, who claimed they are ‘en route to sustainability excellence’ – stating that this application was setting an example for other industrial businesses in the borough to follow.
Planning papers also highlighted how the site currently employs 10 staff and it is anticipated that another three full-time equivalent jobs will be created once the rebuild is completed.
The panel voted unanimously to approve the application.
It might be nice of the victims of the fire at the Tameside Storage premises could extract even an apology from them (the owners) let alone some redress for some of the £6million+ of possessions lost in that fire.
There was hooky free insurance advertising that Tameside Council issued a warning about after the fire that they (the Council) for some very strange reason will not release to the victims, despite an FOI request.
