Supermarket donation helps buy specialist hospital beds

A SIGNIFICANT donation by a supermarket’s foundation has helped to buy four specialist beds at Tameside Hospital.

Morrisons Foundation gifted £4,400 to Tameside and Glossop NHS Charity, with a cheque being presented at the supermarket’s Dukinfield store.

The funding has been used by the Ashton-based hospital to purchase four specialist ‘Swan Beds’, which enable loved ones to stay overnight with a patient who is approaching the end of their life.

Tameside and Glossop NHS Charity is the official charity of Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital and its community services.

Emily Burgin, Charity Manager, said: “We provide care for a population of around 250,000 and are there for us all from day one of our lives and throughout.

“The generous donation from the Morrisons Foundation has been used to purchase four new Swan Beds for the hospital.

“The beds are a vital lifeline for families who wished to be by their loved one’s side at such a sensitive and difficult time. The Swan Beds also mean families do not have to travel back and forth or book hotel rooms, at such a hard time.

“These additional beds will allow us to support more families every single day, making a difference at the time that matters most.”

Alison Cox, Community Champion at the Morrisons store in Dukinfield, presented the donation to the charity.

“I’m very proud that we’ve been able to provide this grant to such a wonderful cause in our community,” she commented.

“The hospital staff work tirelessly to provide vital care to patients, their families and carers and the new beds really will make a big difference to many people from across our region.

“Supporting charities at the heart of our community is what the Morrisons Foundation is all about and I’m privileged to be able to present this donation to Tameside and Glossop NHS Charity.”

The Morrisons Foundation was set up by Morrisons supermarket in 2015 and awards grants for charity projects which help improve people’s lives.

Since launching, over £41 million has been donated to hundreds of charities across England, Scotland and Wales.
