TAMESIDE has another medal to mark to its sporting brilliance after Georgia Taylor-Brown added to her Olympic tally.
The Droylsden triathlete was part of Great Britain’s team for the mixed relay that came third in Paris.
After completing the second leg of four – a 300-metre swim in the River Seine, a seven-kilometre cycle and a 1.8-kilometre run – she cheered on as Beth Potter seemingly snatched silver in a dramatic finish.
Winners Germany finished one second ahead but after all that action, Great Britain were initially declared to have just pipped the United States.
However, a review by race officials, it was confirmed just before the medal ceremony that the Americans had finished second.
Despite the downgrading, Georgia was delighted at the way four individuals – men’s gold medallist Alex Yee and Sam Dickinson were also involved – came together as one team.
After coming sixth in the individual competition, she said: “It was quite nice to be at the front – you can pick your own lines and just commit.
“We all had our individual plans and we executed them pretty well. As a collective then, we ended up walking away with the silver.
“It was an incredible effort from the team and it was pretty stressful watching!”
Georgia’s medal takes her personal haul to a gold, a silver and a bronze after being part of the team that won the competition in Tokyo three years previously.
The former pupil of Fairfield High School for Girls, 30, doubled Tameside’s tally after Ashton’s Anthony Harding, who went to Stalybridge’s Copley Academy, also won a bronze medal in synchronised diving.
Georgia previously told The Correspondent how her story started at Audenshaw’s Aldwyn Primary School – www.tamesidecorrespondent.co.uk/2021/08/27/georgia-taylor-brown-school-is-where-it-all-began/ – and this latest medal is certain to be celebrated.
Her then teacher, Caroline Charnock, recalled: “Little did we know when we awarded Georgia numerous certificates and medals rewarding her sporting achievements in assembly that we were recognising the great strides Georgia was taking towards becoming an Olympian.
“We did know, however, that her attitude to learning and friendships would contribute to a successful career.
“Georgia has fulfilled her ambitions and dreams and is a fantastic ambassador for Aldwyn Primary School. She is an inspiration to us all.”
