A GROUP of local volunteers set up to protect and preserve the Tame Valley have a task on their hands this summer.
The Friends of the Tame Valley have been out bashing away Balsam, an invasive species that poses a threat to native plants.
It was introduced to the UK by returning Victorian botanists almost 200 years ago and is a plant native to the Himalayas.
Without the natural controls provided by its native habitat, Balsam can quickly spread across riverbanks and wetlands, preventing native wildflowers from growing.
The Friends group has gone from strength to strength since it formed in 2021, with the help of Denton and Gorton MP Andrew Gwynne, who is the secretary.
“Thank you to our fabulous group of volunteers who have been working tirelessly to keep the Balsam at bay this summer,” said Gwynne.
“Their work ensures that the Valley is kept looking its best, allowing wildflowers to bloom during the summer months.
“I hope as many people as possible are able to enjoy the Valley this summer and beyond and would encourage anyone who wants to make a difference to this valued local green space, to come and join us!”
