GUIDE Bridge Theatre’s revival of Jumpers for Goalposts, a play by Tom Wells, is an energetic and heartfelt production that balances comedy and sensitive themes.
We follow the story of Barely Athletic, a team of sporting underdogs from Humberside, whose journey is the theatrical equivalent of your favourite feel-good sports movie. The narrative unfolds in a drab changing room at a community football club.
Viv, the overzealous player-coach expelled from Lesbian Rovers for her bossy nature, is passionately portrayed by Michelle Lockwood.
Her performance is a blend of strictness and affection, showcasing Viv’s determination to lead her team to victory while managing her own personal struggles. Michelle brilliantly captures the fiery spirit.
Jason P. Dyson delivers a touching and humorous performance as Joe, the team’s ‘token straight guy,’ who is grappling with grief following the loss of his wife, Viv’s sister.
Jack Corcoran stands out as ‘Beardy Geoff’, the eccentric busker with a penchant for players from rival teams. His comedic timing and quirky charm bring lots of laughs from a very engaged audience.
The romantic subplot between Danny (Jack Davison) and Luke (Adam Carter) adds a tender dimension. They share on-stage chemistry that perfectly conveys the heartfelt nature of their blossoming relationship.
Adam, in particular, shines as the shy librarian, making Luke’s journey from reticence to openness both believable and endearing.
The play’s exploration of love, friendship is deftly handled, with the cast delivering performances that highlight the characters’ struggles and growth.
Guide Bridge Theatre’s production also bravely addresses more serious themes, such as grief and self-acceptance, without losing its overall upbeat and hopeful tone.
Jumpers for Goalposts at Guide Bridge Theatre is a triumph. Well done to the entire cast and crew for bringing this charming story to life.
