Firefighters tackle large blaze on Hyde land

FIRE crews were called out to deal with a large fire at land in Hyde – one of two incidents close by on the same night.

Flames were seen lapping the ground on Dunkirk Lane, close to a farm building earmarked for redevelopment in to six ‘high quality’ homes, on the evening of Friday, May 3.

Smoke billowed across the area as more than one fire engine dealt with the incident – it is thought no-one was injured.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene shortly before 8.25pm on Friday, 3 May.

Three fire engines from Gorton, Chadderton and Ashton-under-Lyne fire stations were called to a fire involving a static caravan and a derelict building.

A spokesperson told The Correspondent: “Crews arrived quickly and used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel, one short extension ladder and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.

“Firefighters made the area safe before departing after approximately one hour and 10 minutes at the scene.”

Meanwhile, less than a mile-and-a-half away, one person was treated for minor injuries after a gas explosion at a house on Glenmore Grove in Dukinfield.

A unit from as far away as Leigh attended the scene following the incident at about 7.15pm – along with colleagues from across Tameside – and was joined by an ambulance crew.

On that event, a spokesperson for GMFRS said: “Shortly after 7.15pm on Friday, May 3, three fire engines from Stalybridge, Mossley and Hyde fire stations, and the Technical Response Unit from Leigh, were called to reports of an explosion on Glenmore Grove, Dukinfield.
