Tameside Council Election Candidates: Ashton St Michael’s

Aaisha Ajmal (Independent)

HELLO, I am Aaisha Ajmal an independent and dedicated candidate for Ashton’s St Michael’s ward.

With a background in law and a passion for social justice, I pledge to prioritise transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in local governance.

Being an independent candidate allows me to represent and focus on community needs over political agendas.

If elected, I will aim to address pressing issues such as the mismanagement of public funds, neglected essential services, lack of community consultation in decision-making and the failure to meet cultural needs.

I will advocate for transparent budgeting, efficient service delivery, and meaningful community engagement.

Together, we can build a stronger, more vibrant community where every voice is heard, and every resident’s needs are met.

Your vote for me is a vote for positive change and effective representation.

Let’s work together to create a better future for our area.

John Bartley (Liberal Democrats)

I HAVE been a resident in the Ashton St Michael’s ward and also a Liberal Democrat for more than 30 years.

I have been a candidate, an agent, a chairperson, a treasurer and data officer over my years of membership.

I am anti-austerity and I look to support people in hard times. Any policy that prunes citizens is, to me, against democracy.

I believe in a fair deal for everyone, building sustainable housing for everyone and protecting our rivers from sewage.

Kevin Berry (Conservatve) did not supply an election profile.

Jean Drennan (Labour)

I AM honoured to have been selected as the St Michael’s ward as your Labour Party candidate.

The Government has stripped £200 million from our local  budget and with the cost of living crisis this has had a profound effect on the lives for our most vulnerable residents, especially children, disabled and elderly.

I see this first hand in our community.

What continues to amaze me is how resilient St Michael’s residents are.

I am proud to support all our community groups who all try to make St Michael’s a better place to live.

These include Cedar Park and Hurst Community Group, Cockbrook Homewatch, Hillgate Residents Group, Friends of King George’s Park and St James’ Church Community Hub.

In addition, I arrange regular litter picks and the removal of fly tipping.

Please can I ask for your vote on May 2 to enable me to help make St Michael’s a great place to live.
