THE friends’ group of a park in Ashton-under-Lyne is looking for volunteers to help keep its facilities running.
The Friends of King George V Playing Fields was established in 2012 with the aim of making the park – which has a children’s play area, five-a-side football pitch and bowling greens – a better place for local residents.
The group has completed many successful projects since, including the installation of an outdoor stage for shows and events, the planting of trees and flowers with an apple orchard, as well as putting in a keep-fit path with outdoor gym equipment.
Last year, Tameside’s first green space Neighbourhood Watch group was launched to help protect the playing fields from crimes.
The Georgie Porgies Cafe has proven popular but, following 12 years of service, Molly Dean has had to retire due to ill health.
The cafe is temporarily closed until the group can find a new Volunteer Cafe Manager, which involves getting the provisions, counting the money and running the rota dates for opening.
A spokesperson for the group added: “We also need more cooks to cook the burgers, servers to get the food ready and collect the money – we now have a card machine.
“We also need important people like washer uppers and cleaners – these roles can be rolled into one.”
There are also other ways people can get involved in the park, off Alexandra Road.
Residents can be part of the horticultural team planting flowers and trees, as well as looking after the apple orchard and removing weeds.
There is also the event team which helps to put on events and shows on the outdoor stage with stone seating in the park.
You can also join the Rubbish Pool Club, which meets in the park every second Tuesday every month at 7pm to pick litter and then play pool in the pool room from 8pm. Chairman Alan Fish was recently presented with a golden litter picker for picking up the most litter.
