Candidates in Tameside’s local elections revealed

PEOPLE in Tameside have learned who they will be able to cast their vote for after the full list of candidates at the forthcoming local election was revealed.

The ruling Labour Party has someone standing in each of the 19 wards, which will return one councillor following the poll on Thursday, May 2.

However, there are several in which only two people are standing.

Independent candidates are standing in four wards – Aaisha Ajmal in Ashton St Michael’s, Kaleel Khan in Ashton St Peters, Steven Barton in Stalybridge North and Philip Fitzpatrick in Hyde Werneth.

Meanwhile, The Workers Party of Britian, which saw George Galloway win the recent parliamentary by-election in Rochdale, will have Audel Shirin as a candidate in Hyde Newton.

If you are not already registered to vote, you must register before midnight on Tuesday, April 16. If you vote in person at your local polling station, you must show a valid photo ID.

If you do not have any valid photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate instead.

The deadline to apply for this certificate is 5pm on Wednesday, April 24.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on April 17.
