Man charged with brutal Mossley murder after worldwide hunt

THE MAN wanted in connection with a brutal murder that stunned a quiet Mossley street has been charged.

John Belfield fled the country following the death of Thomas Campbell at his home on Riverside in July 2022.

Now after being arrested in the South American country of Suriname on drugs charges, the 29-year-old was charged with murder, conspiracy to murder, manslaughter, conspiracy to rob and conspiracy to supply class A drugs when he arrived at Manchester Airport.

Three people, including Mr Campbell’s ex-wife Coleen have already been jailed for offences relating to his death.

Reece Steven, 29 and of Middleton, was found guilty of murder with conspiracy to rob. He was sentenced to life in prison and must serve a minimum of 37 years.

Steven Cleworth, 38 and of Heywood, was found guilty of manslaughter with conspiracy to rob. He was sentenced life and must serve a minimum of 12 years.

Coleen Campbell, 38 and of the Clayton area of Manchester, was found guilty of manslaughter with conspiracy to rob. She was sentenced to 13 years and must serve a minimum of two thirds in prison.

Greater Manchester Police said of Belfield: “He has been remanded into custody and will appear before a Magistrate at a later date.”

And Detective Chief Inspector Liz Hopkinson, of the force’s Major Incident Team, added: “I would like to thank our colleagues in the National Crime Agency and Suriname law enforcement, alongside our officers in GMPs Specialist Operations and Force Critical Wanted Unit, for their tireless pursuit to find Belfield.
