TAMESIDE is blessed to have many picturesque locations, some of which have been captured on camera and featured in a 2024 calendar.
Over the last 12 months, local residents have been submitting photos of the borough to the Tameside Community Champions in a bid to be part of the ‘Tameside through the Seasons’ calendar.
It’s the second successive year that the competition, organised by Tameside Council, has run.
Each month of the year features a photo which represents the season it falls in and around 100 entries had to be narrowed down to just 12, which proved to be a tough task for the judges.
The photographers of the winning entries were invited to the opening of an exhibition showcasing their work at Portland Basin Museum in Ashton, when they also received calendars from the Civic Mayor of Tameside Councillor Tafheen Sharif.
Cllr Sharif, who represents the Mossley ward, said: “The first time we did this was last year and it was absolutely fantastic. The winning entries this year are also very, very good. There are some absolutely amazing and stunning pictures displaying the beauty of our borough.
“I want to thank each of you who submitted a photo and congratulate each of our winners. It’s really important to showcase the beauty of Tameside, I do believe we have many great spots across the borough.”
Sam Shaw’s autumnal image of Stamford Park Boating Lake features as the October photo in the calendar.
Sam, from Ashton-under-Lyne, goes out a lot in the local area of Tameside, where she has lived for nearly 24 years.
“I was out on my bike and I tend to take photos anyway so I have a good eye and I just happened to see the reflections on the water and the colour of it,” she told the Correspondent.
“I took it on my phone and it turned out rather well. I enjoy taking photos and I like being in the outdoors – I love walking, swimming and cycling.”
Retired Ashton resident and intrepid photographer Ken Morris has been among the judges for both years that the calendar competition has run for – a job he has very much enjoyed.
“Some of the winning photos this year really bring out the character and atmosphere of the location,” he opined.
“There are lots of great places around Tameside to take photos.
“I have travelled all around the world taking photos but I always tell people there’s lots of nice photographs on your doorstep.
“Your mobile phone is the perfect tool when you’re walking around but the best cameras are your eyes.”
The free-to-view exhibition of the winners’ shots is open to the public until Thursday, February 29.
A digital version of the calendar is available to download here.
