EIGHTEEN cases of fly-tipping are being investigated after councillors joined a day of action on the streets of Hyde.
Local councillors Phil Chadwick, Denise Ward and Vincent Ricci joined the initiative and got stuck in with clearing rubbish.
They were also accompanied by officers from Tameside Council to clear and investigate fly-tipping and litter in Hyde town centre and surrounding streets.
It was the latest Our Streets days of enforcement action, which have taken place in Tameside to clamp down on fly-tipping and littering.
Waste was found dumped on eight streets – including Port Street, Henry Street, Market Street, Edna Street and Great Norbury Street.
In one location, people added rubbish to a pile of fly-tipping while the clear up was under way.
In total, there were 18 instances of fly-tipping where officers could trace the waste back to offenders.
The council says “appropriate enforcement action” will be taken against them, as well as businesses not taking appropriate measures to control their waste.
Cllr Ricci, who is Tameside Council’s Assistant Executive Member responsible for enforcement, said: “It’s always a great result when we’re able to trace waste back to those responsible for dumping it and hold them accountable for their actions.
“Fly-tipping is completely inexcusable and disrespectful to the local community and environment. We will always take enforcement action against offenders where we find evidence.”
The council says there will be more Our Streets days of action to follow in other areas.
