CHRISTMAS celebrations may well be in full swing right now, but a clarion call has gone out in a bid to keep a summer tradition alive in Denton.
The town’s MP Andrew Gwynne and local councillors are asking for support from the community to help save Denton Carnival.
Denton Carnival Association is a voluntary group set up 30 years ago to bring back the original Denton Mad Hatters Carnival, which folded in the late 1970s.
The event continually survived thanks to a dedicated band of volunteers but, in recent years, a combination of Covid restrictions, the late Queen’s death and personal circumstances for the lead volunteers meant the Carnival had to be cancelled.
They are keen to organise the biggest and best carnival to date in 2024, with help from local people.
“The organisation of the event is massive,” said MP Gwynne. “There is fundraising, organising the Queens, booking bands and parade fillers, liaising with community groups to enter the parade, organising the civic square events, and admin work including advertising, insurance and road closures etc.
“So we are having a steering group meeting on January 4, 2024, at 7pm in The Little Chap pub in Haughton Green.
“Myself, councillor Allison Gwynne and councillor George Newton will be there to help pull things together but again, we need you and your skills and your time too. Please help, and let’s keep this Denton tradition alive!”
