Troubled Hattersley Christmas tree to be replaced

A CHRISTMAS tree that has attracted derision over how it looks will be replaced in time for Hattersley’s lights switch-on.

The ‘living’ showpiece, which stands outside the Hub building, has been mocked for its threadbare appearance, just days before the area’s event.

But Tameside Council has told The Correspondent a new one will be in place by the time the switch is flicked on Friday, December 1.

Long-term, a new living tree will be put in place.

Pictures of the tree as it stands have attracted many comments on social media, suggestions the neighbouring Tesco supermarket should donate one and even offers from people willing to buy another.

Statements included: “It’s shocking. Every other area has lovely displays and we get a tree that’s old battered and tired.”

Others wrote: “Can’t believe they put it up. It looks sad,” and “It is honestly a disgrace, you could go to Hyde Park and find a stick with more on it.

“Surely it’s better they get an artificial and use that each year cos this is getting worse and worse, either that or ask Tesco to donate one.”

But a spokesman for Tameside Council said: “It’s a living tree that has been in place for a few years.

“A cut tree will be supplied for the Hattersley Christmas Lights switch on before it takes place on Friday.

“We are seeking sponsorship to replace the living tree and will seek a different species to help it thrive in this location.”
