Council executive member loses position

A SENIOR Tameside councillor has lost his cabinet role.

As The Correspondent revealed, Dave Sweeton – who held the executive member position for inclusive growth, business and employment – has been replaced.

Denton’s Jack Naylor is the new person with that brief at the authority.

In an email, the council’s chief executive Sandra Stewart states: “As from today (Wednesday, October 4), Cllr David Sweeton will no longer be the Executive Member (Inclusive Growth, Business & Employment), a role which will be forthwith undertaken by Cllr Jack Naylor.

“In order to take up this post, Cllr Naylor has resigned his role as chair of Audit Panel and as this is a council appointment this role will be elected to at the next council.”

Tameside Council’s leader, Cllr Ged Cooney, may make more changes to his team as he looks to go forward.

Cllr Sweeton, who represents the Dukinfield/Stalybridge ward, was handed the position last year after a change at the top.

However, that tenure ended soon after the meeting of the authority on Tuesday, October 3.

One of the things that has been introduced while Cllr Sweeton has held the brief is Ashton-under-Lyne’s Fridays on the Square food concept.

Funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) for Communities and Place, four pilot events will take place on the first Friday of the month from 4pm to 8pm between September and December.

They aim to attract and welcome all ages to join in the fun with great food, drink, art activities and music on offer to help bring a sense of vibrancy and community back to the town centre.

He said: “I am delighted we can use this funding to invest in projects which support the master planning and levelling up work we are doing to help make our town centres, community spaces and cultural offer and support local businesses and the local economy in line with our inclusive growth strategy.

“The event will support opportunities for growth and development for residents and businesses, it gives us the opportunity to evaluate what type of events could be commercially viable for the future.”

As a result of Cllr Naylor’s new role, Cllr Michael Smith will take charge of the audit panel, of which he is deputy chair.
