THE Wilko store in Ashton-under-Lyne will permanently close next week, it has been announced.
The administrators for the high-street chain have confirmed that the store at Tameside One is one of 37 that will shut for good on Monday, September 25.
A further 37 will cease trading on Wednesday, September 27, and another 37 shops on Friday, September 29.
It had been hoped that Wilko’s three Tameside stores – including the ones in Denton and Droylsden – may be saved in a buyout deal.
But after talks fell through, the Droylsden shopping centre site closed last week and the Crownpoint North Shopping Park shop is due to shut on Thursday, September 21.
It remains to be seen whether any of the locations will reopen as B&M stores, after the bargain chain retailer agreed to buy and rebrand 51 of Wilko’s shops in a deal worth £13 million.
Meanwhile, 71 Wilko stores across the UK are confirmed to be rebranded as Poundland – the nearest to Tameside will be at The Peel Centre in Stockport.
All 400 of Wilko’s stores will close by early October, according to administrators from PwC.
Wilko sells household, DIY and homeware goods.
