Torment for Tameside’s football sides

IT WAS not exactly a super Saturday for Tameside’s footballing sides as only Ashton United recorded a victory in the non-league pyramid.

Kielen Adams’ strike was enough to give them a 1-0 win over Morpeth at Hurst Cross, keeping them on the fringes of the play-off picture in the Northern Premier League.

And assistant manager Sean Newton is still wondering how the scoreline was so close – not least because a free kick ruled to have not gone in is believed to have crossed the line.

Ashton United were the only Tameside team to record a victory this weekend

He told the club: “First half I thought we were brilliant. Everything we’ve been working on, you can see it’s starting to take shape.

“We played some unbelievable football. We played closer to where we want to be. We’re getting there but there’s still more to come from this group.”

Hyde United suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Warrington Rylands, leaving them five points off the top.

Manager Nick Spooner said after Harry Pratt’s goal against his former club: “It was very disappointing – the boys just weren’t at it.

“It was just a dead game. We couldn’t create anything at all, we just weren’t good enough.”

Stalybridge Celtic rescued a draw at Bamber Bridge with Kyle Harrison’s 90th minute equaliser, after conceding in the 89th!

And Mossley went down to a 2-1 defeat at Widnes, much to manager Dave Fish’s dismay.

He said: “I don’t think we were brave enough, we didn’t really ask any questions. It was a lack of quality, that’s disappointing.

“Widnes took their goals well but it’s another one for us where we turn up against a side near the bottom and under-perform, underwhelm and under-achieve.

“We’ve dropped six points now against the bottom two sides in the league – that isn’t good enough.”

Curzon Ashton manager Adam Lakeland conceded his side were nowhere near good enough as they slipped to a 3-1 loss at AFC Fylde.

Hayden Campbell’s goal got them level at 1-1 but the boss admitted: “We were miles off it. For the whole game, we struggled to lay a glove on them in truth.”

Denton Town still sit top of the Cheshire League’s League One but they slumped to a 4-0 loss at Golborne Sports, with Jordan Coates scoring all the goals.

There was better news in the Manchester League as Dukinfield Town won 2-0 at home to Atherton Town.

And in rugby union, Aldwinians triumphed over Leigh 30-25 while Ashton recorded a walkover victory over North Manchester.
