Steve Cunningham completes town double as new Ashton United manager

ASHTON United have moved quickly to replace now former manager Michael Clegg by bringing in a familiar face to the town – Steve Cunningham.

The ex-Curzon Ashton boss has taken the reins at Hurst Cross, less than a week after his predecessor resigned in the wake of a 6-0 home derby defeat by Hyde United.

He has been out of work since leaving Buxton, who he guided to last season’s Northern Premier League title, for personal reasons.

And after securing Cunningham’s services Ashton United co-chairman Jonathan Sayer believes he can propel them forward, even this season.

He said: “We’re delighted to appoint someone of Steve‘s calibre.

“Steve is a fantastic manager with a proven track record for winning in this league and above.

“We’re looking forward to the rest of the season where we still believe there’s lots to play for.”

Cunningham’s first match in charge is Saturday’s tough trip to fifth-placed Warrington Rylands, who sit seven points ahead of United and are managed by former United player and boss Jody Banim.
