Tameside charity champion Dorothy dies aged 100

A WOMAN responsible for raising hundreds of thousands of pounds over the course of 51 years has died aged 100.

Dorothy Dawson helped found Mossley Cancer Committee in 1971 and continued to gain funds past her century.

But on Tuesday, December 20, she passed away. However, her legacy will be felt for a long time to come.

And as friend Valerie Lee put it: “She was cheerful and chatty to the end.

“Dorothy may not have had family, but she certainly had friends.”

Dorothy, who lived in Carrbrook, turned 100 on March 29 and even her centenary celebrations turned into a fundraiser for the Mossley Cancer Committee.

And she said at the time: “I couldn’t believe the turnout. People paid donations to get in and I already had about £1,400 at home.

“I can’t thank everyone enough. I’ve got some absolutely wonderful friends, young and old.

“Over the 51 years I’ve been with the Mossley Cancer Committee, we’ve raised in some years as much as £30,000 – £40,000 but during lockdown we couldn’t have any efforts.

“We’d have coffee mornings at Mossley Band Club but we managed to have virtual ones over the Internet.”

For her birthday, Dorothy received 10 bouquets of flowers but insisted she did not want anything.

And after hearing of Dorothy’s death, many supporters of the Cancer Committee and friends paid tribute to an ‘amazing, special and wonderful lady.’
