Stalybridge school at centre of teaching development

A CARRBROOK primary school has found itself the centre of the development of wider teaching development.

Headteachers from across the Greater Manchester area gathered at Buckton Vale Primary to discuss how to hep pupils emotionally.

Covid-19 lockdowns have seen the focus on children’s mental health becoming even stronger.

Now ideas and methods in making sure they are supported as well as educated were discussed and examined in a session at the Swallow Lane school.

And Buckton Vale headteacher Deborah Brown used its Dojo Shop as an example of how both go together.

After hearing of some pupils in year six not having received a prize, she introduced the scheme which sees them able to gain tokens for good behaviour.

Fifty means a small prize, 100 earns a badge and children gaining 300 receive a gold award.

One of the main aims of the session was to try and develop a uniformed approach to schools’ approach towards pupils’ mental health.

Among points were conducting random act of kindness weeks and kindness, breaking down barriers around offices, changing traditional messages and getting children to talk about their feelings.

And a bug message pf the session, which is repeated at different schools across the area, was, ‘We need to teach our children how to cope and not give up. If they leave with ways to cope they will succeed.’
